In book and magazine layouts, this "tying together " is called a "grid. " The grid is the overall look of a page that is carried throughout the entire publication. It may be as simple as the placement of headers and footers on the page, and the location of the page number. In some layouts, such as in your scrapbook, you 'll want some kind of decorative graphics that frame and highlight the photos, without distracting from them. One way would be to draw a square frame around each photo, or, simulate a "drop shadow " by only drawing two sides to the frame, for example, along the right and bottom edges. You could mount the photos on paper mats, so that they look framed by the paper. If you are considering captions, don 't limit your thinking to a line or two below the photo. You can print the captions on pieces of contrasting paper and putting them beside the photo. But whatever grid format you design, try to keep it with some consistancy from page to page. Not that every page has to look the same, but, say you decide to draw a frame around each photo. You can vary the color of the frame line. Or, on some photos, you might use a double line and others, a single line. But if this is your grid choice, ALL featured photos should be framed. A grid may also include a consistant choice of font and type size. Headlines, for instance may all be of larger size Helvetica, or Ariel Black, while the caption fonts may all be Times New Roman in a smaller size. As long as you don 't try to clutter up your pages with lots of different, "decorative " fonts, you will run a smaller risk of detracting from your pictures. One other thing I recommend: Scrapbooks, by nature, have a unique esthetic, different than books and magazines. In a scrapbook, it is okay to have pages sheets of different colors. But I would not mix dark pages and light pages. Stick with just a few related colors, such as pastels, or Earth tones. And, whatever each page color is, keep the rest of the grid consistant. Have fun and good luck. |
